Whether you call it a backyard or a back garden, you can invite energy and imagination of childhood fun with this art print by Scottish artist Sam Skelton. Set against an industrial backdrop of factories and rooftops, the scene captures a group of children (known as weans or bairns in Scotland) who are absorbed in play - kicking a ball, skipping, and experimenting with a wheel - each moment full of movement and spontaneity. The contrast between the structured, smoky city skyline and the lively figures in the foreground creates a compelling narrative, where play and creativity flourish within an urban environment. Warm, earthy tones are balanced with cooler hues, while the textured finish adds depth and a sense of atmosphere to the composition. Whether displayed in a living room or bedroom, this backyard games print brings character, warmth to any interior.
Born in Glasgow in 1949, Sam Skelton studied at Glasgow School of Art before beginning his career as a graphic designer. Painting continuously throughout his later years in life, Sam Skelton was a little known artist with humble beginnings who later devoted himself fully to his art, working as a full-time painter until his death in 2022 - and he built an underground following along the way! The Port Gallery in Kilsyth is proud to offer a collection of exclusive works by Sam Skelton to collectors across the world.
